All children need access to at least one language. For many children, New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) provides the important language experience that is needed for thinking, communicating, and accessing learning and their culture. NZSL is a natural language with its own grammar, and is capable of communicating the full range of expression possible in a spoken language.
In this webinar, Cheryl Spykerman from Deaf Aotearoa, with sign language interpretation from Liz Kay, will discuss the importance of an accessible language for all children, and compare the use of NZSL to verbal languages such as English and te reo Māori. Offering her experience and professional expertise, Cheryl will also help kaiako to:
- Understand the challenges and difficulties that young Deaf children can experience in a hearing-dominated world.
- Explore the range of language approaches and supports that may best meet the needs of an individual Deaf child.
- Plan how to learn NZSL and begin to introduce it to all children in their early childhood setting.
Whether you are supporting a Deaf child or simply want to make your setting more inclusive, this webinar will provide practical knowledge and inspiration for taking your next steps with NZSL.
