This webinar will explore questions related to mātauranga Māori in education, including:

  • What is mātauranga Māori?,
  • How should schools and teachers be conceptualising and addressing mātauranga Māori in teaching and learning?
  • What are some of the key questions, issues, and ideas surrounding mātauranga Māori in education?

We will be joined by Dr Maia Hetaraka (Ngāti Wai, Ngāi Tahu, Ngā Puhi) and Dr Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal (Marutūahu, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngā Puhi). Maia is is director of Tai Tokerau Campus, Te Puna Wananga at the University of Auckland, whose research explores the possibilities and challenges of successfully enacting the Ministry of Education’s Māori education policy within Aotearoa New Zealand’s socio-political context of colonisation. Charles is a Composer and Performer of Music and Story and a Researcher and Teacher of Indigenous Knowledge including mātauranga Māori and iwi histories and traditions.
