Spaces speak to children, and provide opportunities and invitations to play and interact in different ways. In early childhood education, teachers set up, display, and manipulate environments to respond to children’s interests and needs, and to support the enactment of the local curriculum.

Jacqui Lee and her teaching team at Pakuranga Baptist Kindergarten discuss how they set up their indoor environment with purpose and pedagogical intent. Intentionally designed indoor spaces encourage children to collaborate and explore ideas, to engage in individual play, or to relax and spend quiet time with a friend. In this video, the teachers examine the language of the environment and how it impacts the exploration and learning at their centre.
