26 Aug 2025

Matua Johnny Waititi talks about the journey to setting up Te Whānau Rūmaki o Te Puna, an immersion unit at Westlake Boys High School on Auckland’s North Shore. He will talk about the process of setting up Te Whānau Rūmaki o Te Puna, and share insights into how he worked to grow the number of ākonga who are part of the unit.

Johnny also talks about how he supported the development of his fellow kaiako. Te Whānau Rūmaki o Te Puna features a mentoring programme based on the principles of tikanga Māori, and Te Ao Haka, a university-approved Māori Performing Arts programme.
