Intentional Teaching Practices for Early Mathematics Course

This course supports early childhood and early primary teachers in the intentional teaching of mathematics for infants, toddlers, and young children through play and planned activities. The course describes the mathematical content that young children need to engage with in their early years. For each content area, teachers are supported to understand how mathematical thinking develops, to recognise instances of children engaging in mathematical thinking in play and everyday contexts, and to explore ways to enhance and support this learning through intentional teaching practices. Culturally responsive practices and inquiry approaches to mathematics are also discussed.

On completing the course, participants will be able to:
✓ Understand the early skills and knowledge that underpin mathematical learning
✓ Identify instances of mathematical thinking and exploration in children’s play
✓ Build a repertoire of strategies for intentionally supporting children’s developing mathematical knowledge through play
✓ Examine perceptions and assumptions about own maths proficiency and build confidence and enthusiasm for supporting learning in maths

What to expect

Time commitment

Allow 8-10 weeks, 60 minutes per week, plus putting your learning into practice in your own work context

Flexible engagement

With course content available 24-7 and no cut-off date, you can choose when to engage with the learning materials

Multimodal learning

A rich mix of interviews, readings, video case-studies, reflections, and practical activities

What you'll learn

The course is structured into nine parts, with each part designed to take about a week to work through, although participants are free to work at their own pace. Each part has an activity which participants will need to undertake in their own settings.

Parts 3-7 each tackle a different mathematical content area in more depth, and can be completed in any order.

Part 1

Mathematics for everyone introduces the course, and focuses on the key ideas for ensuring that children develop views of themselves as confident mathematicians who are capable and competent in relation to mathematics. This includes teachers exploring their own attitudes and perceptions towards mathematics, as well as a consideration of the importance of culturally responsive mathematics teaching.

Part 2

Early mathematical learning outlines the range of skills and experiences that children need in their early years. It also describes intentional teaching approaches to children’s play and learning.

Part 3

Non-symbolic number skills looks at the mathematical understandings that children develop and are evident before they have a formal understanding of systems for quantification, addition, and subtraction.

Part 4

Symbolic representations for number examines how to support children to learn symbolic number names and written symbols.

Part 5

Connecting symbols to quantities looks at how children learn to connect representations of number to quantities of real items.

Part 6

Symbolic comparisons and operations examines the development of symbolic number comparisons, and symbolic addition and subtraction.

Part 7

Spatial skills explores the importance of spatial skills including shape knowledge, spatial visualisation, and visual-spatial working memory.

Part 8

Pattern looks at the sequence of development of pattern understandings.

Part 9

Summing it up brings together the key ideas about intentional practices for supporting children’s mathematical development, and introduces the development of maths-focused projects as a way of creating meaningful opportunities for mathematical learning.
