What you'll learn on this course
Part 1: Core principles for infant-toddler care and education
Introducing the key theory and research evidence that will guide our decision-making about practice for infants and toddlers across the rest of the course. You will reflect on your image of the infant and toddler and how this impacts on practice.
Part 2: Responsiveness
Develop a complex understanding of what attunement and responsiveness really mean in the infant and toddler context, with reference to theoretical notions of intersubjectivity (beautifully explained by Professor Carmen Dalli), and practical concepts such as ‘serve and return’.
Part 3: Communication
This part examines the research evidence on the importance of creating a language-rich environment for infants and toddlers’ as a foundation for practice. Infants and toddlers are presented as sophisticated communicators and enthusiastic social actors, and ways to support the social and emotional competence that accompanies communication are explored.
Part 4: Caregiving
Caregiving is explored as a foundational component of infant and toddler pedagogy, and an essential context for attuned, intersubjective engagement which provides rich opportunities for children’s learning in a range of areas. The core principles of effective pedagogy are used to support thoughtful reflection on practice as you explore the quality of caregiving moments for children in your setting.
Part 5: Play
Examine what kind of play is appropriate for infants and toddlers, the role of the teacher, and the types of material that facilitate play. Drawing on video footage of infants and toddlers at play, we help you to develop skills in observing and analysing infant and toddler play.
Part 6: Movement
This part establishes learning to move as an important area for pedagogy in the earliest years, requiring sensitive support characterised by respect for, and trust in, children’s unfolding capabilities.
Part 7: Approaches to infant and toddler care and education
Recognise the range of approaches to infant and toddler care and education, and look specifically at the Resources for Infant EducarersTM approach and indigenous Māori and Pasifika approaches to infant and toddler care.
Part 8: Working with families and colleagues for the best infant and toddler care
This last part of the course considers how best to work in partnership with other adults for the best interests of the child and helps you to evaluate current levels of partnership with families, providing stepping stones to deeper levels of collaboration with families, and supports you to examine and reflect upon relationships within your teaching teams.
