Dyslexia is often thought of purely as a reading and spelling difficulty, but research shows it is linked to broader cognitive challenges. In this webinar, Dr Rebecca Gordon from UCL Institute of Education will explore the possible causes of dyslexia and the common difficulties many people with the condition experience, including executive function and working memory challenges. We’ll also look beyond dyslexia to understand what executive function and working memory are, why some students struggle with these skills, and how to identify and support those difficulties in educational and everyday settings. Finally, we’ll discuss what happens as children grow older: how dyslexia and related cognitive deficits such as forgetfulness and problems with planning and time management can persist into adolescence and adulthood, even after reading and spelling skills have caught up. This session will offer practical insights for teachers and school leaders supporting learners of all ages.
