About this resource
Developed in conjunction with Edushop and Gulf Harbour School in Auckland, this resource is designed to show what a systematic approach to teaching mathematics can look like in the classroom. The videos contained within this resource follow a single class through a week of maths lessons. The teacher combines explicit instruction in mathematical concepts and procedures with extended periods of both guided and independent practice. She uses a method that employs concrete, visual, and abstract representations of mathematics to build students’ conceptual and procedural knowledge while managing their cognitive load.
The purpose of these videos is to demonstrate what many of the principles of effective pedagogy, including general principles as well as research-informed strategies for teaching mathematics, can look like in practice. They track a class across a whole week of lessons for a number of reasons. Firstly, this captures the students’ increased fluency and mastery of the concepts and procedures being learned across a week of lessons. Secondly, it authentically exemplifies two essential principles of effective teaching– specifically the importance of teaching new content in small steps while checking for understanding at every step, and the need for students to engage in extensive guided and independent practice with immediate feedback.
The Education Hub would like to extend our grateful thanks to the team at Edushop, and Laura Thrush and Room 21 at Gulf Harbour School, for their generous, enthusiastic participation in creating this resource.
